85 Bangladeshis to Return Sunday, 120 Myanmar Officials to Head Back

85 Bangladeshis are set to return home tomorrow (29 September) after serving prison terms in Myanmar. In exchange, 120 Myanmar Border Guard Police and army personnel will be sent back.

According to Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md Salahuddin, the Bangladeshi nationals left Sittwe Port today and will arrive at Nuniyarchara jetty early Sunday morning.

The Deputy Commissioner said the process will follow the same steps as the previous three phases. After handing over the Bangladeshis, the Myanmar delegation will leave with 120 of their personnel by noon. Md Rahat Bin Qutub from the Ministry of Home Affairs will oversee the repatriation.

The Bangladesh Embassy in Myanmar confirmed that the Myanmar Navy ship ‘UMS Chin Dwin’ set sail for Cox’s Bazar with 85 Bangladeshis on board. The returnees include people held in various prisons across Rakhine state, and they come from districts such as Cox’s Bazar, Dhaka, and more.

In the past 15 months, the embassy has helped repatriate 332 Bangladeshis. Earlier repatriations included 45 Bangladeshis on 9 June and 173 on 25 April, along with returning hundreds of Myanmar personnel who had sought refuge in Bangladesh.
