A New Deadly Variant of Mpox Virus in India

The more dangerous Clade 1 variant of the Mpox virus is spreading rapidly, recently detected in India.

A 38-year-old man from Kerala, who returned from Dubai, has been hospitalized with this strain, which is believed to be more severe and spreads through skin contact. Local authorities are monitoring those who were in contact with him.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a public health emergency regarding the Mpox outbreak in Africa, as the virus continues to spread internationally.

In Kerala, 29 individuals, including the man’s family and flight passengers, are under observation, but none have shown symptoms.

India has seen over 30 cases of the older Clade 2 variant in the past two years, which spreads more slowly. Symptoms of Mpox include fever, headaches, and a rash that begins on the face and can leave scars.

The infection typically resolves within 14 to 21 days, but it can be severe for young children and vulnerable populations, potentially leading to serious complications. Mpox spreads through sexual contact, direct contact, or close interactions with an infected person.
