The BIMSTEC foreign ministers met and highlighted the need to improve connections in areas like transportation, sea routes, and digital networks to boost economic partnerships and interactions between their countries.
This was the first meeting of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Foreign Ministers, held in New York alongside the United Nations General Assembly.
India hosted the meeting, led by its Foreign Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar. Participants included representatives from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Myanmar.
The group discussed their collaboration on health, food security, climate change, security, trade, and energy, and emphasized the need to explore training and skill-building opportunities.
The countries also supported setting up BIMSTEC Centres of Excellence and agreed to continue strengthening cooperation in preparation for the upcoming Leaders’ Summit.
BIMSTEC includes seven countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. They work together on issues like agriculture, trade, technology, and security across various sectors such as energy, disaster management, and health.
