Bangladesh is currently experiencing a prolonged spell of monsoon rains, triggered by a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal. The downpours, while offering much-needed relief from the scorching heat, have also led to concerns about potential flooding and landslides in certain regions.
A Temporary Respite
Meteorological department officials have reported a slight decrease in rainfall intensity today, Thursday, September 26th. However, the respite is expected to be short-lived as weather forecasts predict a resurgence of heavy rainfall in the coming days.
“We anticipate intermittent showers across the country throughout the day,” said Abdur Rahman, a meteorologist. “While the intensity might reduce tomorrow, Friday, there’s a high likelihood of renewed rainfall from October 1st onwards.”
Monsoon’s Might
The persistent monsoon activity is attributed to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and a strong monsoon trough extending from the Bay of Bengal to Assam. The weather agency has issued a heavy rainfall alert for several regions, including Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Rajshahi, and Rangpur.
The heavy rainfall warning from the Meteorological Department states that due to active monsoon, heavy (44 to 88 mm) to very heavy (up to 289 mm) rainfall may occur in some places of Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Rajshahi, and Rangpur divisions until 6 PM today. Additionally, there is a risk of landslides in the hilly areas of the Chattogram division due to heavy rainfall.
Potential Hazards
The relentless downpours pose a significant threat of flooding and landslides, especially in hilly areas. Residents in vulnerable regions have been advised to take necessary precautions.
A Double-Edged Sword
While the monsoon rains are essential for agriculture and replenishing water bodies, excessive rainfall can also lead to widespread devastation. The delicate balance between the benefits and drawbacks of the monsoon season is a constant challenge for Bangladesh.
