During a recent event in New York, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s Interim Government, emphasized the need for Sheikh Hasina to return to Bangladesh and face trial. This statement was made on Wednesday, September 25, in response to a journalist’s question.
Dr. Yunus is currently in the United States to participate in the United Nations General Assembly. When discussing the upcoming elections in Bangladesh, he mentioned that there is no set timeline yet. He anticipates that the commissions formed will offer reform recommendations in the coming months, which will then lead to the announcement of an election date.
When questioned about the possibility of bringing Sheikh Hasina back from India, Dr. Yunus replied affirmatively, suggesting that if she has committed any crimes, she should be brought back to face justice.
In a separate note, Dr. Yunus clarified that he has no intentions of running in the upcoming elections, humorously asking, “Do I look like someone who would run in an election?”
On the same day, Dr. Yunus attended the “Climate Forward” summit organized by The New York Times. At the summit, he expressed concerns about the effectiveness of the Paris Agreement on climate change, stating that the current economic system hinders its success. The Paris Agreement, aimed at mitigating climate change impacts, has been in effect globally since 2016.
