A meeting took place between high-ranking UN officials and Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, to discuss the Rohingya crisis. The meeting was held at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday, September 24, at around 2 AM, according to the Chief Advisor’s Press Secretary.
During the meeting, Dr. Yunus reaffirmed his government’s commitment to collaborating with all parties to ensure the dignity, security, and rights of the Rohingya people, emphasizing the need for a political solution to the crisis.
Dr. Yunus presented three proposals during his discussions with UN officials, including Julie Bishop, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar, Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and Foreign Affairs Advisor Tawhid Hossain.
Despite Bangladesh’s generous support for the Rohingya, the socio-economic and environmental impacts are significant in the densely populated country, posing various security risks. Dr. Yunus stressed that Bangladesh has reached its capacity and repatriation is the only sustainable solution to the crisis.
Earlier that day, Dr. Yunus arrived at John F. Kennedy Airport to attend the 79th session of the United Nations.
During a break in the session, he met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to discuss strengthening Bangladesh-Canada relations and the development of Bangladeshi institutions. Prime Minister Trudeau praised Dr. Yunus for his leadership. Dr. Yunus also met with US President Joe Biden.
