Flash floods have hit the northern districts of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Rangpur, and Gaibandha. Many rivers in these areas, like the Teesta and Brahmaputra, are overflowing, causing low-lying areas to flood.
In some places, the Teesta river’s water level has risen above the danger mark, flooding nearby areas and causing riverbanks to erode.
On Sunday, September 29, the floodwaters trapped over 100,000 people in these five districts. The floods have damaged crops like Aman paddy and vegetables, causing significant losses for the people living in these low-lying areas.
Reports indicate that severe floods have occurred unexpectedly in these five northern districts. If the Teesta river’s water level keeps rising, it could exceed the danger level.
Heavy rains have caused water levels to rise in riverbank areas. The district administrations and the Water Development Board are prepared to handle the situation.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center says that heavy rains and water from India have caused the water levels of all rivers in the Rangpur region to rise. The Teesta river at the Dalia point is flowing 18 centimeters above the danger mark. If the water level continues to increase, there is a risk of flooding in the Rangpur division.
According to the Water Development Board, the Teesta river’s water level is two centimeters above the danger mark.
On Sunday morning, the water flow at the Dalia point was recorded at 52.17 centimeters. All the gates of the barrage have been opened.
