Floods Damage Poultry, Affecting Price Control

Despite government price caps, egg and chicken prices remain high. Floods in Feni and 12 northeastern districts have damaged farms and reduced livestock feed, leading to lower production and supply shortages. Rising feed and chick prices add to the instability.

On August 15, the Department of Livestock Services set the price of eggs at Tk11.87 each and broiler chickens at Tk180 per kg.

However, retailers sell eggs for up to Tk14.16 and broilers for Tk180-190 per kg. Small farmers report losses due to high feed costs, while corporate producers cite flood-related shortages for high prices.

The Bangladesh Poultry Association and regulatory agencies suggest reviewing feed prices. The livestock sector lost Tk435.32 crore due to the floods, affecting farm infrastructure and resulting in the deaths of over 25.48 lakh chickens.

Despite the challenges, daily egg production remains higher than demand. However, large corporate groups supply fewer eggs, driving up prices.

Rising feed costs are partly due to the increased value of the dollar. Government officials are calling for a review of feed prices to stabilize the market.
