A Dhaka court has ordered a four-day remand for former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun in connection with the death of 16-year-old Mohammad Ismamul Haque during the August protests. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman made this decision after Investigation Officer Md Mainul Islam Khan Puluk, a sub-inspector at Shahbagh Police Station, requested a 10-day remand.
Prior to this, Mamun was officially arrested in the case following an application by the investigation officer. The remand request indicated that Mamun had knowledge of the violence and the killing, making his remand necessary to uncover critical information and identify other individuals involved.
Mamun, asserting his innocence, sought bail and the cancellation of the remand, but the magistrate denied these requests and ordered the remand for further questioning. According to the case statement, the victim was shot during a protest at Chankharpool on August 5 and later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on August 7.
The victim’s elder brother, Mohibul Haque, filed a murder case on August 25 against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 26 others at Shahbagh Police Station. Mamun was arrested in Uttara on September 3 and had previously been shown arrested in 12 other murder cases in Dhaka.
