The lifeless bodies of two individuals, identified as Rafiq (62) and Sabbir (16), were found with their throats slit inside a tea shop in Gulshan-2, Dhaka, on September 28. Rafiq was the owner of the tea shop, while Sabbir worked there.
Law enforcement agencies immediately launched an investigation into the murders following the discovery of the bodies.
On the night of October 1, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested another employee of the tea shop, Mohammad Ruman (27), in the Halishahar area of Chittagong. A joint operation by RAB’s intelligence branch, RAB-1, and RAB-7 led to his apprehension. Ruman hails from Kotiadi in Kishoreganj.
At a press conference at RAB’s media center in Kawran Bazar on Wednesday, Lieutenant Colonel Munir Ferdous, director of RAB’s legal and media wing, confirmed Ruman’s arrest.
According to Ruman’s confession, tensions arose over low wages and disagreements with Rafiq, leading to several arguments between them. Under the influence of another party, Ruman ultimately killed Rafiq. When Sabbir witnessed the murder, he was also killed to eliminate any witnesses. Ruman is believed to be involved with at least two other accomplices in this crime.
Colonel Ferdous explained that Rafiq was a caretaker of a nearby residence and had employed Ruman. Sabbir had informed Rafiq of his intention to leave the job, prompting Rafiq to retain Ruman for the position.
The RAB official further mentioned that Rafiq had disputes related to financial transactions with another party, which allegedly lured Ruman into committing the murder with promises of money. The identities of one accomplice have been confirmed, while another remains unknown. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest all individuals involved.
Ruman will be presented in court via police in connection with the murder case, as confirmed by RAB officials.
