Israeli forces have started a ground operation in southern Lebanon, according to a statement from the Israeli military (IDF).
They said the operation involves small, focused raids targeting Hezbollah based on precise intelligence. The goal is to defend Israel and help northern Israeli citizens return home.
After the incursion began, around 10 projectiles were fired into northern Israel from Lebanon, with some being intercepted and others landing in open areas.
An Israeli military spokesperson warned that heavy fighting is happening in southern Lebanon, and accused Hezbollah of using civilians as shields. He advised people not to move vehicles south of the Litani River, following Israel’s earlier demand for Hezbollah to withdraw north of the river.
The IDF confirmed their ground operation is ongoing after a week of airstrikes. A U.S. official said the operation will be significant but not very large.
Meanwhile, Lebanese leaders are calling for a ceasefire and the enforcement of a 2006 U.N. resolution that would remove Hezbollah forces from southern Lebanon.
