Legal Notice to Set Hilsa Price at Tk 700 Per KG

A legal notice has been sent asking that the price of hilsa fish be capped at Tk 700 per kilogram.

On Sunday, September 29, Supreme Court lawyer Khandaker Hasan Shahriar sent the notice.

It was addressed to several officials, including the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, and the National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate, among others.

The notice also asks that the wholesale and retail markets for hilsa fish be monitored within the next 7 days, steps be taken to stop illegal smuggling of hilsa fish across borders, and that India be asked to agree on a common ban on hilsa fishing due to rising sea temperatures or climate change.

It also asks that hilsa fish not be sold to other countries at a lower price than in Bangladesh.

If no action is taken, a case will be filed in the High Court, as stated in the notice.

Earlier, on September 22, another legal notice was sent protesting the permission to export 3,000 tons of hilsa to India.

Since no action was taken, a case was filed in the High Court on September 25, asking for a permanent ban on hilsa exports from the Padma and Meghna rivers., a writ petition was filed in the High Court on September 25, seeking a permanent ban on the export of hilsa from the Padma and Meghna rivers.
