The Awami League has staged a protest against Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the interim government, in New York. The protests took place in front of the Grand Hyatt, where Dr. Yunus was staying, and outside the United Nations headquarters. Dr. Yunus was in New York to attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly.
According to a report by The Economic Times on September 24 and videos uploaded on the verified Facebook page of the Bangladesh Awami League on Friday, September 27, the protests were held separately at these two locations.
The Indian news outlet reported that the protest in front of the Grand Hyatt was held to demand justice and protest against the persecution of minorities. One protester stated, “Sheikh Hasina has not resigned. She is still our Prime Minister. Dr. Yunus, go back. We want Sheikh Hasina’s government.”
In the videos uploaded by the Awami League, slogans for the reinstatement of Sheikh Hasina’s government were heard. Awami League leaders and activists present at the protest made anti-interim government statements.
Dr. Yunus Departs for Bangladesh Dr. Muhammad Yunus left for New York on September 23 to attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly. This was his first foreign trip since taking office as Chief Advisor. He delivered a speech at the UN General Assembly on September 27 and participated in other high-level bilateral meetings and events.
At the time of writing this report, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the interim government, has left New York for Dhaka.
His Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, informed the media that the Chief Advisor and his entourage departed from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport on a Qatar Airways commercial flight at around 9:30 PM local time on Friday. The flight is expected to land at Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport at 2:15 AM Bangladesh time on September 28.
He further stated that this was the most successful visit by any head of government from Bangladesh to the United Nations General Assembly. Dr. Muhammad Yunus met with US President Joe Biden and the heads of government and state of 12 other countries, as well as the heads of various international organizations, and participated in 40 high-level meetings on the sidelines.
