Mehazabien Chowdhury’s film Saba has been receiving significant acclaim following its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
The film is now headed to the prestigious Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), where it will be showcased in the A Window on Asian Cinema section. Saba is produced by Fusion Pictures and written by Maksud Hossain and Trilora Khan, with cinematography by Barkat Hossain Polash.
The plot revolves around a young woman in Dhaka who must take care of her paraplegic mother while also trying to earn a living. As her mother’s condition worsens, the burden becomes almost unbearable.
The film’s script is deeply personal, as Trilora Khan draws from her own 25-year experience of caring for her mother. Maksud Hossain’s own loss—his father-in-law’s death due to COVID-19—shaped the narrative further, imagining a woman in the lower-middle class grappling with caregiving responsibilities in isolation, without financial or family support.
The Busan International Film Festival, one of Asia’s largest film festivals, will take place from October 2 to October 11, with the opening ceremony hosted by actors Park Bo Young and Ahn Jae Hong.
