Shakib Al Hasan is set to retire from international cricket after a long and distinguished career. The veteran Bangladeshi all-rounder announced his retirement from Tests and T20Is just before the Kanpur Test against India. However, he plans to play his final Test match at home against South Africa in October.
Shakib, now 37, has seen a decline in his performance, particularly in bowling, his primary strength. His underwhelming display in the first Test against India raised doubts about his place in the team, prompting his decision to retire.
He also indicated that his ODI career might not extend much longer, expressing his intention to play until the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year.
Shakib confirmed his plans with BCB President Faruk Ahmed and the selectors, stating he hopes to conclude his Test career in Mirpur, provided security conditions allow. He expressed a desire to retire peacefully and safely.
Regarding his T20 career, Shakib believes he has already played his last match during the recent T20 World Cup. However, he remains open to a potential return if needed. He emphasized giving opportunities to new players, believing it’s the right time for Bangladesh cricket to move forward.
Reflecting on his career, Shakib said he has no regrets and feels content with his contributions. He believes his retirement decision is timely for both him and the team, as it opens doors for the next generation of cricketers.
