A massive demonstration, led by former MP Imtiaz Jaleel, descended upon Mumbai on Monday evening, demanding action against BJP MLA Nitesh Rane and preacher Ramgiri Maharaj for their alleged hate speeches. The over 12,000-strong crowd, comprised of Muslims, Dalits, and Marathas, traveled hundreds of miles in a show of solidarity.
The protest, dubbed the ‘Tiranga Samvidhan Rally’, began in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Marathwada. A sea of vehicles, including buses, mini-trucks, and cars, flooded the Samruddhi Super Expressway, causing unprecedented traffic disruptions. The rally aimed to deliver copies of the Constitution to the ruling Mahayuti government and senior police officials, highlighting the need for law and order.
However, Mumbai police, anticipating the protest, had erected barricades at the Mulund toll naka, a key entry point into the city. Over 3,000 police officers were deployed to maintain order and divert traffic. Despite the heavy security presence, the protesters managed to reach the toll plaza.
After handing over their representation to the divisional collector and other government officials, the crowd peacefully dispersed late Monday night. The protest marked a significant display of unity against hate speech and a call for accountability from the authorities.
