The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has shown interest in investing in Bangladesh’s Chattogram port, aiming for mutual financial growth between the two countries.
On Sunday, September 29, UAE Ambassador Abdullah Ali Al Hamoudi met with Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, Adviser for Textiles, Jute, and Shipping, to discuss the possibility of UAE’s involvement in the port’s development.
The ambassador emphasized that as a longstanding ally, the UAE sees this investment as a way to benefit both nations, particularly through enhancing operations at Chattogram Port.
He pointed out that DP World, a logistics company based in Dubai, currently manages ports in over 60 countries worldwide.
Al Hamoudi also highlighted their expertise in managing ports like London Gateway and their extensive experience working in South Asian countries like India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
Sakhawat welcomed the proposal, reiterating Bangladesh’s openness to foreign investments and emphasizing the strong trade and business connections between Bangladesh and the UAE.
He expressed optimism that this partnership would elevate the relationship between the two countries to new heights.
During the meeting, Sakhawat also requested the UAE to simplify transit visa processes for Bangladeshi sailors. In response, the ambassador assured him that the UAE would consider the request seriously.
In addition, Sakhawat encouraged the UAE to explore investment opportunities in Bangladesh’s jute and textile industries, noting the rising global demand for eco-friendly jute products.
He mentioned the growing interest from foreign investors in these sectors and urged the UAE to take advantage of these promising markets.
The meeting was attended by a five-member UAE delegation and senior officials from Bangladesh’s Jute, Textiles, and Shipping ministries.
