The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to Bangladesh’s pursuit of free and fair elections.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken conveyed this support during a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Blinken emphasized the importance of reforms to bolster economic stability and attract foreign investment. He also extended US backing for Bangladesh’s interim government as it navigates this crucial transition period.
According to US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller, discussions included strengthening institutions to combat corruption, uphold media freedom, and protect labor rights and human rights, especially for Rohingya refugees and minority communities.
Fostering Economic Cooperation and Global Support
The talks also covered enhancing US-Bangladesh cooperation in areas such as counterterrorism and economic recovery. Blinken expressed confidence in the interim government’s ability to lead the country toward growth.
In a separate meeting, UN Secretary-General António Guterres echoed these sentiments, pledging the UN’s support for Bangladesh’s political transition and reforms.
He praised the strong partnership between the UN and Bangladesh while addressing the Rohingya refugee crisis and climate change challenges.

Earlier this week, President Joe Biden met with Prof Yunus, extending full US support for the interim government.
Biden emphasized the need for their success in rebuilding the country and welcomed future cooperation between the two nations, highlighting the importance of international assistance in ensuring Bangladesh’s progress.
