The World Bank will support Bangladesh in recovering stolen assets through the Stolen Asset Recovery Initiative. This was discussed during a meeting between a World Bank delegation and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah on Tuesday, September 24.
As per an ACC official, a two-member World Bank team met with the ACC chairman for an hour, starting at 1:45 PM.
ACC Director General (Prevention) Akhtar Hossain mentioned that the meeting focused on the Stolen Asset Recovery Initiative’s role in asset recovery. He emphasized that recovering laundered money requires cooperation from the countries where the money has been moved.
The World Bank will collaborate with law enforcement agencies in those countries to assist in the recovery process.
The discussion also covered enhancing the ACC’s capacity. The delegation assured support in preventing money laundering and discussed strategies for recovering laundered wealth and training ACC officials.
Additionally, ACC officials have recently met with delegations from the FBI and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to address money laundering. The Stolen Asset Recovery Initiative, a partnership between the World Bank Group and UNODC, aims to eliminate safe havens for corrupt funds.
