Yunus-Modi Meeting Expected at BIMSTEC Summit in Thailand This November

A bilateral meeting between Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to take place in November. The meeting may be held on the sidelines of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit in Thailand, according to Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain.

Speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, October 1, Hossain highlighted the importance of maintaining strong relations between Bangladesh and India.

He added that the two leaders might meet during the BIMSTEC summit in Thailand next month to discuss mutual interests.

Regarding visa issues, Hossain mentioned that India is currently only issuing medical visas but is expected to resume all types of visas soon.

Addressing recent controversial remarks by Indian politicians about Bangladesh, the Foreign Affairs Advisor noted that statements made by Indian leaders, including BJP’s Amit Shah, are unacceptable. He emphasized that such comments are not conducive to fostering a positive relationship between the two nations.

On relations with Pakistan, Hossain said that if Pakistan officially apologizes, it could pave the way for improved relations between Dhaka and Islamabad. Otherwise, the relationship will remain as it is, with 1971’s history in mind.

In response to a question about reforms, Hossain explained that six reform commissions have been formed, with three months to provide recommendations by the end of December or early January. He emphasized the need for further stakeholder consultations before finalizing a roadmap.

The government will not take longer than necessary for reforms, he assured.
